Listen While You Wait

Have you ordered my book yet? If you're reading this and you're waiting for it to arrive, if you haven't had time to start reading or if you're one of those people who like to listen to music while you read, there is a playlist for that.

If you're the curious type, you might wonder why I chose the songs I did. Are these my favorite songs? Not necessarily - one of them is my all-time favorite song because it's the best song ever. Ever. Fight me. On the flipside, the worst song known to man, the song that makes me want to kick squirrels, the song that I'm absolutely certain they play in hell to torture people, also appears on this playlist. I chose these songs because they vibe with the book, as a playlist should.

Here are some fun facts about some of the songs on this playlist (and some possible spoilers, so read at your own risk):

  • "Brand New Key" is the song Nell's mother is singing early on in the book.

  • The fictional band, Devious Limbo and its lead guitarist, Gil Bradford, were based on a real band: Night Ranger and their lead guitarist, Brad Gillis.

  • For many years, I thought the song "Believer" was "The River." I still kind of think that. The lyrics to the chorus go, "Bang, take me to, take me to the river. The river." Right?

  • There is a certain area of the playlist that, I feel, requires quirky music. I didn't want to go full quirk. I can get there, but I'm not sure you want to go with me. Therefore, I minimally quirked.

  • I hate "The Wind Beneath My Wings" so much that I purposefully mistitled the song in one place in the book.

  • You'll notice there is no current music on this list. This is because it takes place in the 2010s but also because music is timeless.

  • I love Bette Midler. I really do. I just really, really hate "The Wind Beneath My Wings."
